Blog Topics – Ideas & How To Choose The Right One For You!
Good Blog Topics – How To Pick One & Ideas
Starting a blog is daunting enough, but if you don’t even have a topic to center your new blog on it can feel impossible! With so much knowledge already spewed all over the internet and so many topics of interest to so many different groups of people, how can you possibly choose the right subject matter to center your new site on? Thinking through all of the options can be overwhelming.
When I started my first blog I didn’t think too hard about what topic to center it on. I had been reading a lot of bloggers after the birth of my first baby and had benefitted greatly from their content and perspective. I knew that I wanted to offer the same through my own blog. Maybe you already have a firm idea for what you want to start a blog about. Maybe you have a few that you are debating back and forth about. Or maybe you have no idea at all what to write about but you really want to make money blogging.
Regardless of which camp you fall into you CAN create a successful site. In this post, I want to outline a few basic questions to ask yourself as you consider which topic to center your blog on as well as share some topic ideas. It is my hope that by the end of the post you will have a clearer foundation to grow your new blog on.
Core Things To Consider When Picking Personal Blog Topics
1. Do people search for and want to read about this?
The number one thing to ask yourself when thinking through blog topic ideas is, “do people want to read about this?” If you’re going to start a blog to drive traffic and make money you need to be writing about something that a large number of people find of interest and value – not just yourself. You may LOVE Icelandic Reindeer, but does a large volume of the population? Probably not. Therefore, driving traffic and making money from a blog about Reindeer in Iceland would be extremely difficult.
You don’t have to choose a topic that would be universally loved and popular, but be sure that you consider whether its a topic that at least a high volume sub-set of people care about.
A great way to determine if a topic is popular is to conduct some preliminary keyword research. With a tool like SEMrush you can search for keyword phrases and see the volume of searches conducted for the phrase to gauge whether it’s something that readers search for online. You can also learn a lot from reading other bloggers. Many will share their profit figures or at least advertise that they are making good money, and you can do a little research of your own on what topics successful bloggers write about!
2. Is it a topic that you have knowledge about?
If I had started my parenting blog without having children of my own or a degree in a family-related subject, I probably would have had a hard time growing it (not to mention thinking about things to write). If you want to start a blog that grows and makes you money, you need to be reputable in the subject area that you’re writing about. It doesn’t mean that you have to have a fancy degree, but make sure that you can prove to your readers that you are worth listening to about the topic that you are trying to share.
Readers will not engage with your content or return to your site if they don’t trust you.
3. Do you enjoy sharing knowledge about this topic?
Some bloggers may advise otherwise, but I would encourage you to be sure that you pick a topic for your blog that you enjoy. While starting a new blog can be exciting, there are seasons where blogging is more of a grind. It’s incredibly hard to stick with a blog and see it grow if you don’t have a passion for the subject matter that you are sharing.
My parenting blog took almost a year before it started earning me a decent income. If I hadn’t felt a mission to share helpful knowledge with other moms, had many life experiences fueling blog post content for my site, and had a passion for entrepreneurship and building passive profit for myself, I probably would have given up.
If you don’t pick a blog topic that you are passionate about (or at least interested in) you may find it hard to persevere to success on your blogging journey.
